Recover your leg

Get Moving

At first, your stomach muscles are paralyzed too so you can't sit up without fallig over. Your therapists will work with you on sitting up safely. Once you can do that, you'll be taken by wheelchait to therapy where the therapist will probably strap you to a stationary cycle. As early a possible, the therapists will try to hold you into a standing position because the best thing you can do for your leg is push pressure through it.

Typical progression

You will start in a wheelchair. If your leg was severely impacted, you might stay in a wheelchair for a while. That may just be the reality of your injury, but if you are progressing in rehab of your leg: most of us start with learning to walk with a walker and then if your recovery is progressing, you’ll move to a four prong cane, from there you may move to a simple single prong cane, eventually you may drop the cane altogether.

Recommended Exercises

When you are very early in recovering your leg, therapists often recommend glute bridges until you are strong enough for squats

If your leg is failing to show signs of returning to movement, your therapist may use E-stim to activate your hamstring.

Some devices can help activate your leg and prevent footdrop, Check out the Bioness L300 which uses FES to activate your anterior tibialis (toe lifting muscle).
