Andrés' Story

Andres

My name is Andrés, I am 16 years old, and I was born with cerebral palsy due to a lack of oxygen during birth (I had to be resuscitated). The damage to my brain is in my left hemisphere, so I have right-sided hemiparesis, which means I have weakness, restricted movement, spasticity, and many more symptoms.

Although I have faced many challenges due to my condition, I consider myself a very blessed person because I can walk, talk, communicate, and be aware of my surroundings. I also receive a lot of support from my family. I have learned to love my condition because, while it doesn't define me as a person, it has made me very perseverant, empathetic, and resilient due to the challenges I have had to overcome. It has also given me the drive to strive for things that most people would think are impossible with my condition, such as practicing Taekwondo, athletics, fencing, and more.

Throughout my journey, I have undergone different procedures, such as Botox and Achilles tendon lengthening. I've also undergone various types of therapies, including occupational therapy, hippotherapy, aquatic therapy, and more. Currently, I'm leading a fairly normal life, taking the necessary steps toward pursuing my dream career in psychology and awaiting surgery on my right hand.
